5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Start A Blog

What's up? Are you looking to start a blog?

You must have heard blogging is one of the fastest and easiest ways to make money online.

You must have heard a little information about how selling adverts spaces on blogs gather a lot of revenue for site owners.

Maybe you saw one blogger brag about how much money they make from Google AdSense, Infolinks, Content.Ad,, Pop Ads, and many other Ads services.

Or was it the many affiliate marketing opportunities you learned about? Click bank, Amazon, and a host of many others?

Maybe you don't even want to start a blog to make money. Maybe you just want to be heard.

Or you want to set up a blog to make it serve as your portfolio for the professional services you offer.

The good thing is that a blog can serve many purposes. Many big brands and large companies now have blog sections on their websites and platforms. Brands like HubSpot, MOZ, Google, Yahoo, PayPal, Payoneer, e.t.c, now have blogs where they use it to get closer to their present and potential customers.

Maybe you are set out to make money or you just want to be heard, congratulations, you have a made the right step. A blog can open many opportunities for you, and it is absolutely true that you can make a lot of money from blogging. The sad case that this does not happen overnight.

In fact, some bloggers do not even earn a dollar till after working tirelessly on their blog for more than two solid years. The journey to making money online via a blog will be rough, you would lose hope, you would even want to give up. And if you lack ultimate patience and perseverance, you will give up and look elsewhere.

This is the truth of the matter. I know way many bloggers that started with me about 18 months ago and are nowhere to be found in the blogosphere today. Clearly, they got tired and gave up.

Blogging is not a "quick way" to make money online. You need to put in a lot of work and efforts. I am happy to have started this blog to make it easier for blogging newbies/noobs. I always say, "if I knew what I know today before I started blogging, I would be far ahead than where I am today...". It is the plain truth. I started out as a freelance writer before venturing into blogging.

And right now, I have a Celebrity news blog and another Health & self-care blog. These are my main projects, but I felt the need to have a side Blogging/SEO tips blog to record everything I have learned so far.

If you are reading this and you don't have a blog yet, then you are just like me who was curious to know a lot before setting out. And that is really good because I won't waste your time any further. When I wanted to start blogging, I did a whole lot of research that took across many nations on the internet. I got to know of many wonderful experience bloggers like Neil Patel, Glen Allsopp, John Murrow, and many others I can't even remember their names. I learned a lot, and I can assure you, if you follow, you will learn a lot too.

5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Start A Blog

So, enough of the fluff. What questions do you need to ask yourself before you start a blog?

1. Why do I need to blog?

Yes, why do you need to blog? You can't just start a blog because your friends or relatives are doing it. Why do you think you should start a blog? Is it to teach people the skills you have acquired? Is it showcase your talents and business? Or whether to express your opinions and get heard? There are many reasons you should have a blog. If you think you have a wonderful knowledge that people should know off, then blogging is the way. If you are a small and medium scale business owner, you could blog about the importance of your business to the society. Do you have talents, business, or just anything you think people would love to spend their precious time on? Go ahead and start a blog.

2. What will I blog about?

If you are here and you don't know what you could blog about, you might as well get out now and never start a blog. This is imperative because you may be motivated by the money and end up with a blog that adds no value to the readers. According to MOZ, there are over 168 million websites, and over 70% are crap. So, we do not want more crappy websites. If you have nothing to offer online users, just go away. Scared? Oh, calm down. However, you can start to make a research of interests you. You don't have to be an expert to start a blog. In fact, you can even start a blog on something that interests you and this will serve as a learning curve for you till you become a pro. Like me, I studied computer science in school, but today, I write health and self-care blogs so well you could mistake me for a medical doctor. So brace yourself, you are going to need to study and make researches a lot if you want to hit the ground running as a blogger.

3. Should I use a free or paid blogging platforms?

By now, you should know there are free and paid platforms to host your blogs on. We have Google's Blogspot, WordPress, Joomla, Wix, Tumblr, Freenom, and others. There is a paid version of Wordpress, which is far better than any other content management systems because it has a lot of tools that leaves you in total control of your site/blog. The Blogspot is the best free platform that even let you own your custom domain and still let you host your blog on it. If you are looking to equip yourself with basic blogging skills before you move to paid, then Blogspot is for you. The free WordPress is a good one to learn to blog too, because of its features which are not available on Blogspot. The only downside is that there are many plugins that are not available on it, also you can't use your own custom domain. And it is a lot expensive when you want to upgrade to paid version where you host your blog on WordPress. The cheapest way to use WP is to host on a cheaper hosting server like Bluehost, which comes with a free custom domain, then you install WP CMS and install all other free and paid plugins that would define your blogging success. The cheapest hosting plan is Bluehost for 3 years, where the whole fee would not be more than $100. And when you go with this plan, search engines recognize you mean business, and can rank your blog quicker.

4. How often should I publish a post on the blog?

This totally depends on you. And I would like to say this, "quality over quantity. Less is more sometimes". As a new blogger, it is advisable to have about 10 posts ready before you start a new blog. Because when you open and start to promote, you don't want people to visit the blog and find just one content. When you have about 5 to 10 posts, the viewers can look through and see you are ready for business, they get to come back for more. After publishing your first posts, you need to decide how often you would post. Instead of posting a lot of short articles regularly, super bloggers advice to write long, and if you are going to write long, you sure need a lot of time to make researches and write. Then, daily posting may not be possible. Some say your posts should be more than 1,000 words, others say 1,500. Whichever way, just write quality posts that would leave your reader coming back for more. The exception here is for news bloggers.

5. When should I monetize my blog?

Before you start a blog, you should decide if you are going to be blogging to make money or just for passion. If you start out with passion and decide to make money later, no problem. But if you start to make quick money, then you may be left frustrated when the money doesn't come quicker. First, go for passion, and when you start to find success in traffic, then you can monetize that traffic. That means your passion will start making you money. But when you are in it for the money, you may never offer the best value to your viewers. There are many other ways to make money online aside from blogging, like Forex trading, betting, surveys, and many others. So, you can try those options instead of frustrating yourself blogging.

Conclusion: blogging is interesting if you do it rightly. Do not set out to use black or grey hat methods if you have been reading about them because you could leave yourself in Google penalty risk. Start a blog today, choose the best specific niche for yourself, start creating search engine optimized contents, submit your blog to search engines and blog directories, and do social media promotion. Keep to these and you would find success. Good luck.
